The skin is one of the largest single organs in the body, covering approximately 18 square feet and weighing about 8 pounds. Both the amount and the complexity of its activities are enormous. An area of skin the size of a quarter contains some 3,000,000 cells, 100 sweat glands, 50 nerve endings, 3 feet of blood vessels and nearly as many lymphatic vessels. The skin is the thinnest on the eyelids and thickest on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. The skin actually thins after the age of 40, becoming almost translucent in older adults.

So What Kind of Skin Do You Have?

Wood energy is that of the energetic Spring and the color green. This is the season of bursting Yang energy, and wood skin reflects the balance and health of the liver and gallbladder. A wood energetic imbalance often causes excessive oil production in the skin including blackheads and hyperpigmentation.

Fire energy is the energy of summer and of the color red. This season is marked by Yang reaching its fullest while Yin is at its lowest point. The organs of fire are heart and small intestine and the imbalance of fire can produce excessive perspiration, redness, sensitivity and blotchiness.

Metal energy is that of the fall when cooler eather returns and the colors shift to blue and/or white. The organs of this season are the lungs and the large intestine. A metal imbalance often means a skin lacking oxygenation and minerals, which cause poor water retention leaving skin lifeless and dull.

Water energy is that of winter and the colors black and/or violet. Nights are longer and the organs that are affected are kidneys and bladder. A water imbalance can produce dehydration that results in fine lines, wrinkles and lack of skin tone. Additionally, puffiness and/or dark circles under the eyes point to a water energetic imbalance.

Earth is the energy of the changing of the season, so earth energy appears four times a year for 18 days when the energy is said to return back to Earth. It is in harmony with the color yellow and the corresponding organs are spleen and stomach. An earth imbalance results in toxin buildup appearing as skin blemishes, acne and/or large pores.

Isis Perfect Skin

Healthy Skin...

In conjunction with other organs such as the colon, kidneys, and lungs, the skin accounts for as much as 10% of total bodily elimination. If waste is not eliminated efficiently, a greater burden and more stress will be placed on various organs and toxic conditions may occur. Skin cleansing and detoxification are both essential for eliminating waste, environmental chemicals, pesticides and other substances from the body. Improper elimination is thought to be one of the causes of skin conditions such as acne among those who suffer from chronic constipation. Skin cleansing and detoxification have also proven useful in the treatment of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Your skin is more important than you think. It is not just how it looks in the mirror, but how healthy it keeps your entire body. The healthier the body, the more beautiful the skin.

Chinese Five Element Skin Care

We use Traditional Chinese Medicine theory to analyze and treat skin at ISIS. The Five Elements allow us to organize and anticipate all possible skin conditions and the likely direction of the aging process. The condition of the skin, the shape of the body and the body's biorhythm can point out where energy is low or in excess. This can also be influenced by the season of the year and the lifestyle issues that the client experiences.
